5 Steps to Your Personal Brand Identity
Branding has been something corporations have done for eons. When you think Coca-Cola your mind immediately brings up an image of a coke bottle and the famous red lettering. Think Nike and your mind conjured up the famous check-mark and their slogan “Just Do It.”
What many people do not get is the importance of branding themselves, fondly referred to as “YOU Inc.” You may be asking, “Why is this so important?” Well take the two aforementioned examples. As I pointed out when you think about a certain company they have a brand associated with them, that is what they are known for and how people recognize them. Same goes for you. To get known for who you are and what you stand for, you need a personal brand.
Simply put the definition of Personal Branding- It is how you market yourself and are perceived by others, in other words, how you appear to the world.
So the next question is “how do you personally brand yourself?” Well for starters you want to use your name, not some fancy, cutesy name or incorporating your MLM company’s name with your name. You don’t want to be known as Super Protein Sally. That is not the name on your birth certificate, use your name that your parents thought long and hard to give you. Be proud of your name!
To build your personal brand identity here are five ways to go about it:
1. Know who your target audience. For example, what is your product or service and who would benefit from it?
Here’s is a sentence that may help: I do _________ for _________market.
However, think outside the box when thinking about your target market. Don’t just think about your immediate market. Just because you are in a particular direct sales company doesn’t mean you need to market yourself to that particular product or service. I actually recommend you don’t and I will explain later why. So think about what makes you unique. Do you have leadership skills? Are you a social media wizard? Are you awesome at building people’s confidence? Brand yourself for what you want to be known for.
2. Create content to serve your niche market. Peter Montoya, a recognized leader in personal branding recommends when you write a piece of content to keep the acronym A.P.E. in mind.
A- Actionable content. When writing content be sure that the person reading your content can take immediate action.
P – Pertinent – Your content needs to serve your target market.
E – Educational. Your content should educate your audience.
3. Build Relationships. Go into this with the mindset that you are looking for new friends. Communicate with people. Find out what excites them, what doesn’t excite them, in other words be a friend. The goal is to serve people, not make money.
4. Build Your List. When writing a piece of content post it on social media sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Linkedin. You can even join some blogging groups on Facebook and post your blog posts. Warning, these groups do have rules, so make sure you adhere to them before posting. This is a great way to get your name out there though and for people to find you and become familiar with who YOU are.
5. Get Results. You need to get results and be able to prove to your niche market you know what you are talking about, so here is a great tip on how to get your brand known:
Find someone in your niche market that is well known and offer to do something for them for free. For example, say you are in health and wellness and you follow a health and wellness guru, maybe you are great at getting results from Facebook Ads; contact that guru and offer to do their Facebook Ad’s to help them get more exposure in the marketplace. This not only proves you are an expert but it also gets you a testimony and exposure.
Things you DO NOT want to do:
Don’t think that everything is about you. You have an audience to serve and they only care about what you can do for them.
Don’t be one of those people who constantly post pictures of their products, stacks of money, flashy cars or big mansions. Again people don’t care what you have; they only care how you can help them solve their problems. Just be authentic.
The biggest DON’T – don’t wait until you think you have everything perfect. Your blog or website doesn’t have to be perfect to start rolling out content. You have to get known and the only way to do that is to get your content out there.
So you might be thinking, “This is all well and good, but I need to make money now.” Well keep this in mind – branding yourself and learning marketing will serve you for years to come. If you want to become a 6, 7, 8 figure earner and you want to continue on that path long term you have to brand yourself and learn marketing.
The reason you do not want to brand yourself as your direct sales company is those that brand themselves as their company are not doing themselves any favors. When you brand yourself as your company and then decide to leave that company or the company goes belly up you are forever perceived as that person who belonged to XYZ company. Try going to your family and friends now and say “Oh I’m not in XYZ company anymore, but I have this new product that is the best on the market.” Do this a few times and your family and friends will go into the witness protection program just to avoid you! Plus why do you want to give your company free advertising?
So you first need to figure out what it is you want to stand for, write content that is relevant to your brand, build relationships, build your list, and get results. It really isn’t that difficult.
